COR Healthcare: History and Philosophy
The origins of our medical group date back to 1952 when Dr. Milford Wyman established what was to become a premier cardiology group based in
the Los Angeles Harbor region of the South Bay. Similarly, Dr. Gary Kissel founded a group based in the Torrance and beach areas of the South Bay.
Later these two groups merged to become what is now known as COR Healthcare Medical Associates. The Name "COR" comes from the Latin name for heart. The group has grown at a steady rate, expanding its services and expertise.
Today COR Healthcare Medical Associates is the largest cardiology group in the South Bay. We provide the broadest range of locations, services, and testing facilities. COR is the only cardiology group providing services at all three South Bay hospitals---Little Company of Mary Hospital, Torrance and San Pedro locations, and Torrance Memorial Medical Center.
COR is a truly integrated medical group. We are not physicians simply sharing an office and night call. Our philosophy is to allow our physicians to focus exclusively on the practice of medicine. To that end, we have developed a skilled professional management staff to handle day-to-day business management, and our physicians are not compensated via monetary incentives. All physicians are reimbursed equally to remove financial incentives. This type of structure ensures that any decisions pertaining to a patient's care are not influenced by non-medical considerations. Our formula serves both our physicians and patients very well. The physicians have a collaborative working relationship and a high level of professional satisfaction that is often commented on by our patients.
